Description

Image recorded across 3 nights in July 2022. It is sort of magic that an image comes out while pointing low on the horizon, just above the trees, in direction of city center’s light pollution, and - cherry on the cake - moon light. Narrow-band filters are a gift!

I found no nickname for this nebula, how about "France Nebula"? The shape of the nebula reminds me a bit the France Hexagon, with some additional peninsulae in the north coast...

NGC 6559 is a star-forming region located at a distance of about 5000 light-years from Earth, in the constellation of Sagittarius.

Visible are red-yellow glowing emission nebulae of hydrogen, blue reflection nebulae of dust, dark absorption nebulae of dust, and the stars that formed from them. The first massive stars formed from the dense gas will emit energetic light and winds that erode, fragment, and sculpt their birthplace. And then they explode. The resulting morass can be as beautiful as it is complex. After tens of millions of years, the dust boils away, the gas gets swept away, and all that is left is a naked open cluster of stars.

The nebula was discovered 196 years ago, on the 1st of July 1826 by John Herschel with his 48-cm telescope.
